Maxidor's Awards and Achievements - 2002 Maxidor nominated as one of the top 300 companies in South Africa(South Africa's Top 300 Companies - National Edition 2002/2003) Top Companies Publishing's premier publication, South Africa's Top 300 Companies - National Edition, provides a record of our country's most successful and respected corporations. The companies profiled in this publication are those believed to have achieved a special place in the economic pantheon of South Africa. All are distinguished as leaders in their own field, both those already established and those emerging to prominence. Six full-time professional researchers were employed by SA Top 300. Seven points of reference were selected when assessing entry criteria for the top companies. These are: turnover, market leader, level of empowerment, quality of operation, export orientation, growth rate and service orientation. All data was then reviewed by the Department of Business Studies at the University of Cape Town ensuring that entries qualify according to criteria. Entry criteria:
After thoroughly researching over 5,000 companies in 150 business sectors and analysing each one through a set of very strict criteria, South Africa's Top 300 national companies were selected. Maxidor (Pty) Ltd was one of the top in its
particular business sector. Cyril Ramaphosa: “Foreign investment is at the heart of the successful transformation of our economy and society. And communication is the key to setting up the practical channels for such investment. The Top 300 Companies publication offers a comprehensive showcase of what the country has to offer in all its main areas of production. It gives a picture broad in scope and detailed in its examination of the different regions and the performance of the various financial and industrial sectors.”
SA Top 300 CSI Company 2002"Impumelelo", the Xhosa word for success, is the title given to the publication, South Africa's Top 300 Black Empowerment Companies.
Nelson Mandela: "A rising generation of black businessmen and women is entering the marketplace, both in their own companies and as members of the more progressive white organisations. They are setting out to create a new business world, one both national and international in its scope. They have the freedom now to achieve 'Impumelelo', which is the Xhosa word for 'success', and the subject of this publication. The Top 300 Black Empowerment Companies is about these men and women, and the companies they are building. It is both highly relevant and very topical, and will continue to be in future editions. The Top 300 Black Empowerment Companies provides a showcase of this emerging sector, assisting both local and overseas companies in choosing areas for profitable investment. I have no hesitation in supporting its aims and believe that this directory will become a key reference work for South African business and industry in the future." Cyril Ramaphosa: "Impumelelo: in this landmark publication, for the first time we are able to gain an overview of progress in one of the most important aspects of the new South Africa - the emergence of a new class of black company owners, entrepreneurs and managers, taking their rightful place in the country's economic life. Not only have they opened up new territory, but they have done so coming from a legacy of social, economic and educational deprivation, where opportunities to acquire skills and expertise were almost non-existent. The Top 300 Black Empowerment Companies is a showcase of many of the people who are following this path." Tokyo Sexwale: "It is essential that we produce a new generation of business leaders who will spur others to move forward and act as role models for aspiring young business people of our country. The publication of Impumelelo is, once again, set to play a key role in charting the progress of empowerment and in identifying role models and leaders in the field of black business as well as in highlighting their own Impumelelo, success." Khaya Ngqula, CEO, IDC: "The IDC will always strive to identify the most creative financing mechanisms to empower the historically disadvantaged and effectively boost their participation in the formal economy. In so doing, we believe that many of the socio-economic ills facing the majority of our people will be progressively reduced and eventually eradicated. The second edition of The Top 300 Black Empowerment Companies is assisting us in realising this vision by charting and encouraging the progress of black economic empowerment. Obviously the black businessmen and women featured in this publication represent merely the tip of an already sizeable iceberg, but its base will be rapidly widened as their efforts and achievements are replicated by thousands of others. After all, hardly anything is as contagious as success - Impumelelo!" Entry criteria In response to requests from Government, and in the light of the new criteria put forward by the Tender Board, with a view to avoiding exploitation by 'fronting' companies, the entry criteria into the 2001/2002 edition of Impumelelo were tightened considerably to focus only on companies that have significant empowerment equity, or share ownership, as well as a significant empowerment operational participation - in other words, black working ownership. Also considered is the level of empowerment among directors, management, skilled employees and total employees in each company. Other entry criteria considered were:
